I came across these really nice high-output (Par 16) RGB LED bulbs which are controlled with an IR remote.

http://www.bulbamerica.com/High-Power-LED-E27-Lamp-3085-prod.htm?category_id=198

The link is probably not the best price.. but at least one example. I have seen them from $45 to $60 range.

They use a standard Edison socket. There is also an MR-16 version available. The lights have an IR sensor on them so they can be controlled via the IR remote which is optional.

So, what if someone came up with a computer controlled solution to send IR signals to these to control them via PC R2232 or USB to IR.

Theory:

1. Use supplied remote to teach custom computer program remote commands. Store them and develop custom appication to execute them via PC to IR interface.

2. RGB E27 / or MR-16 bulbs are placed within line-of-sight of IR transmitter in yard. There would have to be a weatherproof housing of some sort.

3. Computer program sends remote commands to trigger auto programs, fade, strobe, colors and brightness (same things the remote controls).

These units show that one remote can control all of them. So why not make that controller a PC. Then we have custom controlled RGB fixtures for our displays which are computer controlled at less than half the cost.

Any thoughts?

Can these things be hacked to even custom mix colors within the 16.7million color spectrum?

That's even a better price more photos and user with reviews.. not bad.

So what if someone could come up with a PC to IR interface to control these things? Figure a way to hack it and make it do what we want when we want.

The PC to IR interface is pretty easy to do.  Google should help you (although you are not interested in IRDA for this purpose).  The transmitter portion of  WinLIRC  (for windows) and LIRC (for linux) should both be helpful.

Stuff from dealextreme literally comes on the slow boat from China, but eventually it comes. It just takes a couple weeks. There is a lot of cool, dirt cheap, but often junky, stuff on their site. I can't complain about the stuff I've gotten from them, but all name brands on the site are fake just so you know.
