Hey, Paul.

I'm downright giddy.

OK, question on payment.  The announcement says 50% deposit, then net 30 when they are shipped.  Would it be possible to send two 25% payments during the 30 day period, thus still paying the remaining 50% in 30 days, but in two payments?  Or does that mess up your accounting?

May or may not be an issue for me - beginning of the year through April is unpredictable, but usually a tough time.  On the other hand, I had a big capitol expenditure this year, which could lead to owing less to, or even getting a refund from, the IRS...

I would love to see a C7/C9 "replacement bulb" that worked with animation... however due to the technology I doubt it will ever happen (still, it would be nice if Paul would surprise us).  The best that can be hoped for currently is fixed wiring replacement strands instead of replacement bulbs.

LEDs are low voltage DC devices... depending on the color it varies between 2 and 4 volts typically.  Even if you cram 5 in series in the replacement bulb, that is only 10-20 volts... meaning the rest has to be dissipated.  Assuming a 60mA LED (arbitrarily chosen) that would require 7.2 watts to be dropped across a resistor (picture a large wirewound block of waste heat) and would make the C7/C9 no more efficient than its incandescent counterpart.  To get around this resistive limitation, the C7/C9 replacements do not use a resistor to drop the voltage... they use a capacitor instead.  Wait a minute.. a capacitor???  Yes.  You see, although it isn't a fixed value (it changes depending on the current applied), the resistance for the LED can be calculated at a specific current.  Since that is known, placing a capacitor in series with it creates an RC (resistive-capacitive) circuit.  In simpler terms... a high pass filter (think like the treble knob on a radio).  If that filter is tuned to let us say 2000 Hz (I haven't done the specific math) but the mains current is 60Hz, the filter will make the LEDs only see the 10-20 volts at 60Hz.  Don't believe me... make an AC power supply that puts out 10-20 volts at 2000Hz... the bulb will glow very well!  The problem is that triacs (used in AC dimming controllers) don't like this as it creates a phase shift in the current flow making the zero current crossing not line up with the zero voltage crossing.

Personally, I'd be fine if they would make 5VDC/12VDC replacement C7/C9s... I'd cut the AC end off of a light string and wire it to a DC controller.  I doubt they will do this though, as these products are intended for the average consumer where rewiring light strands is less desireable and/or downright unsafe.  After all, if it has a C7/C9 base somebody is going to try to put it in a normal C7/C9 strand!

Edit: I missed the part about C7/C9s in a mini base... now that is an innovative workaround!  Due to budget I'm probably still more inclined to stick with C6 LEDs, but I am impressed and intrigued with the idea at the same time... oh the possibilities!

Hi there Paul,

I'd like to get in on a group buy for 100 count LED's in several colors, as well as LED floods.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello, I am interested in this COOP. Do you have dimmable LED C9 bulbs? If so I would like to get 100 of them in Red, Green, Amber, White, Blue. Notice I said WOULD LIKE, not I will. I am hoping to get a string or two of C9's converted since they use the most power.

Ben

Would love to see the group pricing before jumping in.

Your 26' mega trees look very similar in shape to my 26' mega.  Mine is 26' to the top of the star and has a 14' base.  It was originally designed around the 23' - 26' length of a set of 100 count incandescent minis (2.5" spacing).  I believe Paul's LEDs use wider 4" spacing so the math is different.  From the best I can determine, below is the spacing of Paul's LEDs:

50 count:    17'
70 count:    23'
100 count:  34'

If you wish to maintain the 23' strand length, you are probably looking at the 70 count lights (at least that is the conclusion I ended up at with my own tree).  Of course you could have a completely different scheme in mind... in which case nevermind anything I said.

Is there posted string lengths yet?

I'd be interested in 64 to 96 strings depending on length and light count.

C8/M6 is the size I currently have in the few strings.  Probably stick to that size fore now.

Cheers

Steve

I'd like to see you offer the M5 or M6 LEDs on four to five foot spacing for use on the lawn.  The better color and durability would make it attractive to others currently offered.

I'm in for a bunch of c9, c7 and C6-Minis. I'm buying for a few people, can't wait for the sale... Of Course I'm not sure which C6-Mini's I want yet... WOO HOO!!!

Paul's LED's are the best. Our 5000 LED Mega tree was a huge hit this year..

I would also like to get on the group buy.  Will Paul be sending out e-mails to everyone on this page.  I checked his website but didn't see anything on the announcement page.

Thanks,

Rich
