For those that Ordered MR16's in Group Buy III they are coming in this week.

If you haven't done already please PM me your complete shipping address.
(I think I PM'd those that haven't but this should help cover all bases)

I will start shipping later this week.

Also if you didn't get in on this last one send me a PM. I'm placing yet another order
but this will be for selling direct and at similar pricing. PC members will of course
get a discount. More info to come...

I wasn't sure how tough this was going to be, since I've never used them.  But since I now know that these are the EASY versions, I'm OK.:]

Are there more links with info on how to use these.  I'm trying to understand how they are powered as well as what LOR controller would be best to use with them?

Thanks Jeff

You can power them with an appropriate 12 volt power supply. Either AC or DC.

Now if you want to control them with LOR or Dlight's DC controller you will need
an appropriate sized DC power supply. These MR16's draw .167 amps at 12 volts.
Most folks are using old PC power supplies. I have a how to on my site:
http://www.christmasinkent.com/HowTo.htm

So if you want to color wash you house you might need about 25 to cover about
100'. 25 of these will require a 5 amp (4.725 amp) power supply.

You will need to enclose both the power supply, controller and MR16's.

Do a search (in PC) on MR16's and you see lots of great ideas for weather proofing
the MR16's.

Kevin,

Don't you have better things to do than answer reader's questions right now?

(Like pack and ship MR-16's.) :P

Actually I've been testing these babies to be sure of what "Easy" sent me.

And it looks like they sent me (us) the same style as GBII. Now before everyone
freaks out, I'm doing a video of what these look like when dimming.

If you plan on dimming these and I'm sure most of you will then you will need
to put a 22 ohm resister in series on one of the leads.

Here's the good news. I ordered enough 22 ohm 2 watt resisters to include
one for each MR16 ordered. If you don't need them let me know but if I don't
here from someone I'm including in each order (no charge).

I'll be posting a video tonight so folks know what to expect. Even the dimming with GBI was perfect but it was much better GBII.

I used GBII MR16's in my show last year (with resisters) and they worked fine.
I have videos on my site. I used them to uplight white stick trees.

BTW - Chuck, your order is 17th in line. Annalisa was first.

Any questions? Please PM Me.

I have a question - how many LED necklaces did the "Crazy Light Lady" give you at PLUS?

;)

There might be a better solution than the resistor.  I think a suitably sized inductor in series with the lamp, and a diode reverse biased across the inductor and lamp may in combination allow for a good range of dimming (if not especially linear) without impacting full brightness..

Thankfully I have a LOR DC card here already, so I will have what I need to test once the lamps are here.  (Not that I will necessarily have time right away)

Well Kevin I think you just jumped to the top of the list. That is if you don't mind
testing and helping us that are electronically challenged.

Here's the video of red and green MR16's with and without the resister.

http://www.christmasinkent.com/Videos.htm

You might have to turn up the volume to hear my ramblings but in a nut shell:

Maybe it's just me but the MR16 with the resister looked brighter on my ceiling
than the one without. You decide.

If you plan on dimming these you will need to put a 22 ohm resister in series with
one the leads of the MR16. The dimming will be different than with your other
lights in your show. They dim best from zero to about 50%. After 50% there is
little noticable difference. I dealt with this in last years show by just changing the
range of dimming for the MR16 vs the other type lights in you show. This should be
easy with LORII the their interface which allows switching dimming ranges.

I am including one resister for every MR16 so you should be good to go once you
receive your order. Of course you'll need a power supply and controller and some
sort of enclosure and some sort of cover for the MR16's since they are not
weather proof. Easy as they say....

Kevin,

Thanks for providing the video. That helps out a bunch. I do want the resistors as to get the good dimming effect.

Also, I haven't been to your website in awhile, but could you explain the light fixtures used in the video?

By the way, one of those MR16s you were testing sounded like a dog's wining. Is that an extra feature you didn't tell us about?

Tom

That was supposed to be a surprise. You can hook these up to your phone so
your dog can answer when you're gone.

The fixtures I used are from here. They aren't cheap but they work great. I still
have to cover the MR16's. Used half of the same globes I used in my nativity
spots (also on my how to page). When I make more I'll be used the Richard
type of spot cover. Plastic cups and a spike.
