Mini lights combined with stakes every 2-4 feet would work.  You could also use rope light to achieve the same effect.

I put up a virtual fence of blow molds combined with a real removable fence. One side of the property line is 28 evenly spaced soldiers with a mini light string running the length. Across the front or the yard, is the removable fence sections interspersed with blow mold nutcrackers. I picked up the fence sections, white picketts from Menards a couple of years back. They stand about 3 feet high and are staked into the ground. The 6 sections of each fence have a wireframe holly leaf attached. It lights up great, keeps people pretty much out of the yard, and looks pretty good!

Check out my website under the 2005 display. There is two types I have:

1.Candy Cane- I used a DLS to have the lights chase up and down along the road. On the candy canes I used eye hooks and zip tied the lights to it. Also you can add other odds and ends to the eye hooks.

2.Net light- I used pvc pipe as the frame and stretched the netlights between them. Every section can be disassemble during tear down.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I used these nutcrackers this year for the front. Arches on the side. Have used candy canes with mini lights and garland. Had some handmade wooden lamps that I used a few times.

My solution:

http://www.plymouthlights.com/canes.htm

Works well, looks nice (better in person than in those photos), and hardly anyone ever crosses it.

This one is done with candy cane poles topped with rope light: red and green twisted together.  The base is C7 bulbs.

I go to Lowes and pick up a bunch of wooden stakes. I hammer them in about 6 to 10 feet apart. Then I take my blue icicle lights and staple the lights to the top of every stake and string them all along. Works great and the blue lights are dim enough to hide the look of the stakes.

I know I am not near as big as you all on here but this fence bought from sears works nicely.  It is about 2 feet tall and cones in about 15' sections I think
