I use mini's as a roof border, and the roof, and the garden, pretty much everything...

The only C7 or C9 bulbs I have are two - one in each candle holding figure.

This is a photograph showing the side of the house - it seems to show the roof border the best out of all the photos this year.

From a distance at the front, this is what they look like:

This year I plan on changing the front roof's border to red and white led to match the triagles.

It is very hard to make good clean strait lines with minis.  It's very easy to make good clean strait lines with C9s installed with plastic clips.  (You could do it with minis using plastic clips but that would require 100 clips for 25 feet instead of 25 clips for 25 feet.)  Good clean lines will make your display look great.  For examples of good clean lines check out Ron Lister's site http://www.christmaswonders.com.

Heres red and green. and I've covered the roof with whites.

You can't see the colors that well when they are "whitewashed" with the whites.
They do show up good on their own though.

what about fixing the minis to something like a small piece of wood trim or a long strip of coro and then attaching that to the roof ?

You can make straight lines with minis. It is time consuming. What you have to do is fold the bulb and socket down to the wire and use tape or a zip tie to secure it to the wire. All the bulbs will be laying in the same direction. Once you do that, you can attach the string to your roof with regular clips.

It's kind of hard to see, but on my website, all my windows are outlined in this fashion. Mini's have a tendancy to want to be all over the place and pointing in all directions. That is somewhat evident if you look at the multi color mini "outline" of my house. Especially over the garage doors. I still have easy access to my window strings and can take a picture for you if needed.

There was a house this past Christmas near me that had outlined all corners, roof lines, windows & doors with multi minis.

I did C-9's & C-7's this past Christmas and after seeing that house I think I am going to do the same this year.

I liked the look and the electrical savings will be a big an added bonus

Easy but a bit more time consuming way is to cut 1" strips of coro 8' long and plug the mini's into those (after you drill the holes of course).  100 lights = 99" = 8.25 feet.  just tape the ends off a couple of bulbs and it works pretty nicely to an 8' length.  This way they are extremely straight. If you space them 1"...they are very bright.

i currently use minis to outline my roof. they work okay, but tend to be "all over the place". what makes mine worse is a tile roof that actually hides the minis quite well. i will be switching to c7's or 9's this year because I love the straight look. To make it easier I will be attaching them to 10' 1x2's. I can store them on ladder hooks on the wall in my garage in the off season and simply lay themn on top of my ridge and use three spring clamps to fasten and...tada...perfectly straight ridge in no time at all (well, except for the first year)

I like C7's for the roof line.  In the past I have used C9's but they use 1.43 amps compared to 1.03 for C7's.  You really cannot tell the difference between the two once on the roof so I recommend the C7's to save on power consumption.  I bought several sets of C7's for 2008.

I like C7's but this year I'm replacing my incandesnet C7's with LED C7's

Check out Richard's house, he uses C9's and it's looks awesome.

I love Richard's display.  I would call it my inspiration.  My roof is made up of shingles and I would prefer to use long strips of something, wood???, to attach the lights to and then attach those to the roof.  How do you attach the strips to the roof?  Is wood the best material?  I have never used coro, where do you get it?

Thanks

Personally, I don't like the look of minis on the roofline.  I do like the look, if your willing to put minis EVERYWHERE.  But for edges only, kind of lackluster.  I'm sure it can be done well with extra effort ... but the typical mini roof edge isn't so slick, mainly because of the crooked lines.

This year, I went to all the house I consider the 'best looking' ... and found that the really 'over-the-top' houses that I liked had both C9(s) and icicles on the roofline.  SO my vote is for C9 + icicles.

I'm not skilled enough to install a decent roofline unless it using C7(s) or C9(s).  And I can't yet afford LED C9's ... and don't know if they are truly LOR compatible either.

I just had a thought for a roof line. Make some leaping arches but don't bend them. leave them straight like ChuckHutchings firesticks. Then put them all around the roofline.
I'd do it but I don't have enough channels, cash for channels, enough extension cords,.........:(

Oh! what I could do with 3000 cahnnels.

You know I wasn't sure about my neighbors display as we put almost 1500 Multi-Mini's on his roofline but, it looked amazing. He had those "RidgeCap" things along his rooflines so he intertwined the Mini's along them. Time consuming, yes but, the effect was great. It was like a 6 inch wide swath of mini lights all the way along.
I kept commenting on it all season to him as it was really great to look out at!

I'd like to do some sort of outline at my place and with oodles of C9 Strands freeing up around here I'll wait until I can afford the C9 LED and then out line my roofline!

Hey Everyone,

We are late getting in on this topic. We used Mini LEDS on our roof line last year. Mounted them to a 1x2 strip of wood. Painted it brown so it would kind of blend with our roof. Then we stapled each light on both sides so that they would stand up straight. We used 3 strips on the sides of the gables (front and back).  They were attached to each other using a small metal bracket. Then mounted them to the roof. One small screw at the top and one at the bottom. It did take some time mounting them all, but it worked out great.

See our pictures.
