I use a length of re-bar from home depot or Lowes.  When The display is done and the ground is frozen solid, I take a pipe wrench and turn the rebars around in thier holes, breaking the ice and making them easy to pull out.

jpcrew,

No need to "buy" anything!  Take some wire coat hangers and use snips to cut them into about 12 inch sections.  Bend them over like a "U" and use that.  It shouldn't pull out of the ground unless someone kicks them over.

if your short on time to make things... then just run to wal-mart or any sporting goods store and grab a few tent stakes.

My wife has the same "problem" with wire coat hangers. She does not understand just how valuable they are and their many uses when you really need on. Plastic in this house too.:X
