Hi all,

Next year I am looking at making 6x4' mini trees animated through 4 colours (red, blue, green, clear). My question is how many lights would you use on a 4' tree? I'm thinking either 200 or 300, but would like some input from those with experience of mini trees.

I know on a 3ft tree the norm is 300 lights. If you are wanting to go 4 colors and it is 4 ft I would go 200 of each color giving you a total of 800 per tree.

Cheers Texan, that's exactly the sort of info I was hoping for.

Now I just need to wait for the USD to become a bit weaker against the GBP and then I can put in a huge order with one of the many on-line companies.

Can I ask what you are going to make your trees out of, most specifically the frame under the mini lights.

At the moment I'm looking at a tripod made of metal garden canes (the ones that come covered in a green plastic), probably with chicken wire wrapped around them. I'd love to use tomato cages, but they appear to be non-existent in the UK (anywhere I've looked anyway).

That is unless there are better ideas out there...

Hi! I made the trees you are describing and used 100 lights per color.  It works great and that will be the base for what I'm building next year.  I will share my pictures with you when i get them online.

Great. Cheers Alan. Having run some figures through my head I'm probably going to go with 3 colours of 200 lights. Saves me 6 channels that way, which can be put elsewhere.

They look great. I was probably going to make them like Bob V's in this thread...

There are many ways to make trees. :)  Let us know how they turn out.  And remember! Tomato cages go on clearance after the planting seasons!  I got a strange look when i just took all they had at $.25 each.

Only problem being tomato cages don't appear to exisit in the UK. I've looked over the net but to no joy.

Funny I got many of the same looks when I asked Menards to get them down with a forklift :?

I made mine using 100 ct lights, three colors (Red, Clear and Mutli)  The frame was with tomato cages.  You could also use chicken wire rolled as a cone.

I used 44" tomato cages, cut and spread wider and wrapped in chicken wire.  I used 300 multi and 300 clear for each.
On the tree's I used LED's I used 300 clear and 200 LED multi.
The LED's are brighter and don't need as many.  I would say 2/3 of mini's.
I made 4 color changing tree's  I used 200 each LED for 800 total.
