I put up over 6,000 (not much to some I have seen on here) lights this year and kept telling my wife that I wanted to find some way to make them dance. Well I found this page and the LOR page and now my wife thinks I have totally lost my mind. I have a great idea for a mega tree. I have lots more ideas but I need to know where is the best place to start with LOR. What should be the first set up I get? If my wife doesn't kill me first (because I have got so into this). LOL I really want to have a great display for 2008. Really I think she is looking forward to doing this too. I have a 45ft Redwood in my front yard I wrap in lights every year and she hates heights and she told me she will go up in the lift with me next year Any help and advice would be great. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to me finding this place I think my wife is going nuts. Oh she says it is me who is going nuts with lights!!!!!!!!!
welcome....this was my second year animating and im a stay at home mom...so if i can do it...you can do it.....This year will be our third year and we will be making a big jump in channels....and adding a mega tree and arches...
The first year we had 16 channels and i wish i had gotten more. I think its all in what your comfortable with....I say 32 to 48 is a good start even if you dont use them all the first year...but some people start at 80 or more.....
we bought a showtime completed kit i think.....then we made our own controllers for this year.....I edited my own music thru audacity and it was fun and easy....
i had like 8000 lights the first year and like 15000 this year....

Thanks for the info. When you say you built your own did you get the kits and do all the work or did you get the boards that are built and add your own boxes and cords? We know nothing about the programing so is the program you used from LOR or something else?

We have been on the LOR site and this site and still are confused. We down loaded the demo LOR soft ware and got even more confused. I want to put my lights to music. Is there a simple way to get the lights to dance to the music? Look at the photo on my profile. I think I want to put 3 colors and 3 slices top, middle and bottom for just that tree. What do you think? Any other ideas?

Its easy and its not. You have to create all the paterns in lor, either to the music or to a patten that you like. There is a plug-in for media player that will talk to a LOR board and make the lights go to the music. (nut much fun). go to lightoramasequences.com There you can download a complete seqence(less the music). You then have to find the music on line. that will give you a better IDEA. (download one with Video it helps)

When you say the plug-in talks to the LOR board, are you saying that you don't have to do the sequencing? I don't understand. From what I've read so far, the sequencing is the hard part. The tapping out the sequences to the music.

LOR II has alot of tools that make the job easier. The plug-in for media player does it all. It controlls the lights, you just pick the songs. the plug-in is called LORvis
I personally like doing my own sequencing...Its not hard, just time consuming....I am not a plug and play kinda girl....but alot of people like it....You will also need an fm transmitter as well to hear the music, so we have the Ramsey 25B model and its like $180 now on ebay. Not bad.
We bought the CTB PC16 its under the DIY section under hobbyist stuff. I am gonna buy the ones that are presoldered this year.
Alot of people use LOR Sequences to get some stuff done easier... I havent used it though. I never will......You need to buy the software for like $99 unless you buy a showtime kit with it in it...I just learned how....I watched the tutorials and then my hubby showed me but i was still kinda confused...then i just figured it out on my own.
Or theres Animated Lighting but its expensive and its plug and play. You need an FM Transmitter though....
Hey Rooster - I started this past year with 80 channels from LOR... I decided to buy the pre-soldered boards w/enclosures and cords so it was just some quick connecting and I was done.
With the music, you simply have to find the song(s) you want to work with, go into the LOR program and create a new music sequence, decide to use the tapper or not (I personally don't... I just set the time breaks to .1 of a second and go from there).
If you PM me, I'm happy to chat w/you offline or live via phone to talk you through the "basics." There's a TON of info here, at the LOR forums, the LOR site... I know it can be confusing. But there's a TON of us out here who can help if you'd like.
I also live in Bakersfield and this year (2007) was my first with LOR. I only have 16 channels. I plan on taking everything down monday/tuesday. If you are available, let me know and I can show you the set-up before it all comes down. Heck, while you're there, I can show you how much fun it is to take stuff down too!! Just kidding.
It may at least give you an idea of what 16 channels can do as well as seeing the software in action.
If you watch KGET (ch 17), Alyssa Carlson did the weather from our house the Friday before Christmas.
Feel free to send me a message if you are interested. Good luck, looking forward to seeing another show in town next year.
