Hey Skibozo, I found 3 and 4" white PVC at Temecula Pipe and supply. The 3" was $8 dollars and change and the 4" was like 12 dollars for a 10' stick. I think they carry larger sizes also but I didn"t get the info. and its not a wholesale only place.
Mark, thanks for the head's up. I think I don't need any more 4", but if so I might mosey over to Temecula. Not sure if the gas would offset the saving though. I found 4" ABS at $13.50 at Lowes. It is more work painting, but then I think I would still have painted the PVC anyways.
I purchased 7 pipes. 4 I cut to make NPL's. The other 3? Future post ...... Maybe in a couple of weeks, I'm out on vacation next week.

Do you think PVC cement could be used to to fuse the cut "kerfs"? mark wrote: Terry, I did give some thought to that approach. The cement I have doesn't really "fuse" the plastic. The cement remains flexible. I think the cement would hold only temporarily.
I'm still trying to come up with a way to heat up a 4" or 6" pipe and bend it. That would be the easiest way. There has to be a way to do it. skibozo wrote: Oh, I cut each wedge using a 12" miter saw.
It might not work with the 4 inch PVC but with thinner sizes you can just heat it up and bend it without any cutting. Here is a link to Tim F's how-to on bending PVC to make canes:
I've purchased my PVC welder and I've been thinking of ways to easily light the cane for night effect but not make it look to odd during the day. I was thinking about buying some of the light string just can't seem to find it. Any thougths or other ideas?
Has anyone besides me and skibozo had any luck making their candy canes? I decided I didn't really like the red duct tape. So, I am in the process of painting stripes on 4 canes. It is difficult to make the stripes match up.
Thanks for the reply. Like you I plan to paint them. I've gotten all my supplies. How are you anchoring them to the ground. I was thinking putting a small PCV pipe in the front and back inside and caping them so I can place them over some rebar.
I have several lengths of the thick pipe used for underground gas lines. I guess these days they use some kind of PVC for gas lines. Anyway, I plan on pounding the 1 to 2" pipe about three feet into the ground, leaving 4-5 feet above ground. It may take 2 or 3 to hold each candy cane. My lawn could use the aeration, as long as I miss the sprinkler system.
You did an awesome job on the canes. I plan on builing some myself just as soon as I can get the material from work for free. I might have to wait till spring though which is a bummer, but it's worth the wait to save a bundle. I was talking to my buddy who is in the heating equipment repair field about how I want to make some candy canes. He told me that plumbers have this electrical wrap type thing that they wrap around a PVC pipe and it heats it up so you can bend it into any shape needed. I'm thinking it's similar to the wrap you put on your house water pipes to prevent them from freezing in the winter. I didn't get into any specifics about it with him,so I don't know what it's called or what size pipe it will work on and I'm not sure he even knows all that? I think he may have seen others using it but not himself? Something to look into anyway. Any Plumbers on this site that can shed some light on this?

The wrap your friend referred to is more like an electric blanket. They get very hot. I have priced them online. They are way out of reach for me. If I remember correctly, they were $400-$1000. I still think there must be a better way.

You are going to put a cape on your candy canes?
Not exactly... I'm going to take to small PVC pipes and put them inside the large candy cane one and secure with screws. I will be placing a cap on the 2 small ones inside so I can simply slide those over 2 peices of rebar and the small caps will hold the rbar from going through the end.

I wonder if they can be rented from Taylor rental or Superior rental ?
I'm Gonna have to look into it.
