I made a sort of stencil for the teeth:

Next, I cut a slot for the beard to go into:

I then stuck in half a mop and put some Gorilla glue on the inside:

I did a similar process for the hair. I'm waiting for the glue to dry and will have photos shortly.

Thanks.

I also started on a nose for the poor guy. I just took a piece of 2X4, cut it and started sanding.

I think it will look OK.

Tomorrow I hope to get this one more or less done.

That is looking fantastic Chuck.

Where's the gold fringe around the shoulders?;)

I can't wait to start building my pair.

The mop for a beard is a great idea, I don't think I ever would have thought about it having a beard.

Thanks for sharing all this

The fabric shop closed and I don't know where another one is. I could probably find it at Walmart but I rarely go there.

Here's a shot of him with his hair and nose added (I still have to touch up some paint and finish the body details):

Edit: To attach the hair and beard I used a sawzall to cut a 1/2" slot and then shoved the stitched end of the mop (see pic at bottom of page 11) into the slot. I then squirted a bunch of Gorilla glue over it on the inside. Once that hardened, it became a solid mass firmly glued to the inside of the barrel. I don't think it's going anywhere! :))

That looks fantastic Chuck.

Are you going to attempt having the beard come to a point?

Oh, sure! Then he'll look just like every other 10' nutcracker on the block! :P

I hadn't thought about it. I actually have some issues to work out with the hair/beard before I get into that.

First of all, I'll need to see how much weight gets added to the thing if it rains. Those ARE mops and it's likely they'll do what mops do.  I might have to actually paint them just to keep them from being absorbent.

After that, we'll see about my tonsorial skills. ;)

I've done a little Googling for nutcracker pics and, based on that and my preconceived notion of what a nutcracker looks like, I have to ask: What do you people in CA think nutcrackers look like?

Every one I've seen has a squared-off beard at both ends.

I think some sort of wax would be the way to go.

Not sure just what  at the moment ,I'll have to give it more thought.

I wonder if you dipped it several times in an industrial floor wax?

And where's his beard and hair?

Feh!

Thank goodness I didn't grow up in CA, so I do know what a nuctcracker looks like. ;)     It's beard (in the traditional German Nutcracker doll) curves in at the bottom and comes to a soft or semi-soft point.  :P

I think Gary's nutcracker would be more comfortable in this outift:

Edit: Now that I think about it, I think the two guys that live in the house next door might prefer it, too. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) :P

Phyllis,

I have it on good authority (by someone that has lived in Germany for 13 years) that you are nuts. :P

My contact informed me that "real" nutcrackers always have a squared-off beard due to the mechanism involved.

Hence, I shall NOT be trimming the beard on my nutcracker.

Feel free to make your own sick, twisted version of it, though!

Chuck I must say very impressive. They are really looking great. I may have to make a set in a year or two to gaurd the front porch. Keep those pictures coming so we can keep p on your progress.

I need to start feeling "it" again so I can get to work on my projects. I am hoping your nutcrackers will help motivate me.

Ah ... well that's the problem they just "lived" there.  One of my ex-husbands would have quite a few choice words for such a "non-German" even having an opinion on such things.  But then again ... my ex was German, never "opinionated" or anything, just always right because after all, he was German.   Enough said.

And Yes Chuck, I will be making my very own Sick, Twisted and even Freakish Version.  In 2009 (I hope).

I'll be sure to post a pic or two, just to scare you silly.
