OK. Now that I'm reading this forum thanks to Mike making me buy those blasted things for him, would one of you mind explaining to me what the difference is among the various manufacturers?
GFI, Poloron, Empire...whatever.
What is the difference? Are they essentially the same figures with different paint jobs? Is there a difference in quality?
What gives?
Seriously. Now I'm curious.
Edit: Don't worry. I have no intention of getting into blowmolds and bidding against any of you on CraigsList!

For me , it really doesn't matter. I do like older molds, but I will take any and all. To me it seems like all of a sudden everyone is looking for these things. lets not let the sellers get wind of this...

Poloron, Beco are the older molds..and yes there are many other older molds as well. Carolina Product became Empire and then you have Union, Grand Venture General Foam, Drainage and so on.
I have found that some people want the original mold made from the original manufacturer. I am one that likes that. As lots of molds were remade by other companies like Dave said with different paint schemes. I have also found that a lot of people do not care and just want the mold. So it just comes down to preference. To really get the true scoop on the companies and molds then chat with Mel, Bill Weiss or Bill Miller as those 3 have the mold knowledge down to a tee.

No prb, and always nice to get information. And seriously if you talk to Mel Fischer, BillWeiss or Bill Miller you will be amazed how much insight they can give you. Mel has in the past helped me identify a few things, Bill Miller taught the blowmold class and Bill Weiss keeps track of what is sold in stores and by whom. It is truly amazing what those 3 know.
To a few of us, blow mold collecting can be like coin collecting. Coin collectors collect coins from all the different mints even though they are identical other then their mint mark. A few of us collect the same looking blow molds, made from the same steel molds, because they are made by a different company. It is all part of the enjoyment of the collecting hobby.
One example in our collection is the drummer boy. To our knowledge, we have at least one of every color, made by all the manufacturers that have made them from the beginning, other then the GenFoam one, which to my knowledge has never been sold in our area. Some day we will get around to getting a couple of those also, to complete that segment of the collection. There might be others missing from our collection that we either don't know about or have forgotten about. If so, we will add them as we have the opportunity.
Hey does anyone know should i just delete all the old watched forums? As i browse nothing comes up except what is all new since the site got going again, all old forums dont find any results like if you type in Beco nothing comes up etc. ??

Maybe I'll start getting duplicate strings of lights from Phillips, GE, etc...
You basically have 2 situations to consider--items made from the same mold and items made from different molds. It is very expensive to create the actual metal mold that is used to create a blowmold. Because of this many companies have purchased molds from other companies that have gone out of business or decided to stop producing holiday items. For example when Empire went out of business General Foam Plastics bought most of their molds. In this case you do have (at least to some extent) essentually the same item with a different paint scheme. There are some other factors though. As with many things the items made by the older companies are sometimes a better quality (thicker plastic, better paint jobs). Also some of the old items had accessories such as a snowman's broom that are not present on the newer versions.
With items made from different molds you usually end up with completely different items however this is not always the case. Some items from different molds still look very similar (toy soldiers, drummer boys). I tend to think of 2 catagories of "blowmolders" which are collectors and displayers. The collecter thinks of it just as Mel described in the coin collecting analogy. The displayer is mainly concerned with the suitability of a particular item for their display without so much concern about manufacturer. (I think most of us are somewhere in the middle.)
