He's using the video capabilities of Animated Lighting's products. This is where I see the future of light displays going. Check it out, it's fantastic. Thanks Mike for raising the bar, your display is very inspirational.
WOW!!!!! That is fantastic. I just sat here watching it with my 9 yr old daughter and she wanted to know if we could do that. I said I doubt it. The video board is amazing. Love to se a how'd they do that on this display.
That is amazing! The video addition really makes the entire show super fun to watch. I've been looking to do something like this for a couple years, but couldn't figure out a way to do it outside without destroying TV's. Mike Z, can you share your details? Thx!
Wow. This is a perfect example of how far we can really go with our displays. This show has everything from flash, to emotion to comedy. I don't see how it can get any better than this. What an inspiration to all of us! Incredible job!
Wayne, the projector is inside my garage shooting out the side window onto the rear projection screen. I didn't want to use the projector outside due to security reasons.
Peggy, It took me a month to program and create the video content and then 6 days to set-up this year.

So, Mike, the video you made is just an .AVI file that is triggered to run when the sequence begins? I noticed that the projector output is crystal clear. Do you have any pictures of your setup? I can't imagine many people re-creating your setup. It took you a month to create the video and you do video editing by trade...so it must have been tricky.
I am impressed with your creativity, mix of styles of music, and video content. Great job! Your show is entertaining...and fun to watch. If you ever have any detail pictures, I sure would like to see them. Thx!
Wayne, The lights are actually synced to a WMV movie running in Anim. Director. I first programmed to a MP3 and then later replaced it with a WMV, which was the exact same thing plus video. When you hit test with the WMV, there is actually a longer delay than the usual 3 second preroll.
I can take pictures of the set-up, but there's nothing impressive about it. I have a Optoma projector sitting on an old cigar box that is sitting on a air cleaner that happened to be gathering dust on the shelves in the garage. I ran out of time to make something more permanent. The projector shoots out the side garage window, which is directly behind the screen. I would have liked to created a bigger screen, but I was limited by safe and secure projector placement and the run of the video cable. As soon as I get a chance, I'll take some set-up pictures.
Great Mike! Any pictures would be appreciated. You must be getting large crowds about now.
OK, so you created an MP3, then created a WMV which you created with something like Adobe Premiere. It also appears that you are running one long sequence instead of one for each individual song. That way, you don't have any pauses (or load times). Was it tons of work doing the video? Thx!
I can't wait to see the pictures you take. Your show really did impress me. I was thinking about your projection system and something came to mind. I assume that you had to produce your video with mirrored text. This is the only way you could project it from the back and have it come out right...correct? Or am I all wrong about that?
I gotta tell you, both my wife and I got teary eyed when the song from The Grinch came up and pictures of family Christmases started appearing on the screen. A very tender moment! I always say for something to be art it must move you. Well, to me, that makes your display a true piece of art.
Thanks Don and Greg, I'm glad you enjoyed the display. I really try to create at least one emotional element in the routine. This year the video was a perfect way to walk down the Christmas memory lane with my family.
Wayne, it took a bit of time to gather and animate all the elements I used in the video. Suprisingly the Santa was shot on a Sunday afternoon, composited, edited and completed later in the evening. The most time consuming element was animating the elf's mouth. And you're correct about the projector, you can reverse the image or rotate it as well. The keystoning correction is also very good.
