I just received a DMX board and a Q-spot from AL yesterday.  My initial experiments have really been fun and exciting.  I have run into a problem, however, I can seem to get the pan to work through the test lights form.  All the other channels work fine.  In fact, in one of the setting the tilt starts on channel 0, the pan should be first.

Any ideas or suggestions as to why the pan ( left to right movement) doesn't work?

I know that the board and the Q-spot work, because when I push the self test it runs through all the movements including pan.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or help,

TIm

The Qspots are a bit picky with the default refresh rate on the AL DMX boards.

Verify the following on your DMX Controller itself:

1) Ensure the DMX Signal jumpers (both of them) are set to 'NORMAL' , not inverted.

2) Set the bank of dipswitches to the following:

1-4 OFF

5 ON

6-8 OFF.

And just general good measure in DMX play:

3) if you are using long dmx cables, make sure you terminate the end of the line. DMX is very sensitive to the end reflection back of signals.

4) There _is_ a difference between mic XLR 3pin and dmx XLR 3pin. use the right cables to save yourself alot of oddiities.

cheers,

Thanks for the info.  I checked several things.

1. Good

2. Set the switches from 4, 5, 6 on to  just 5 on.  This made the Q-spot behave weid

3.  My cable is 5 foot.  I have not set the termination

4.  My cable does say it is a mike cable not a DMX cable.  I wonder why it would make a difference it we are talking just three wires.

I played it with for a while.  I am missing the pan channel completely, no matter what setting I have it on.  It looks like the pan should be on the first channel (0), but instead the tilt starts at 0.

ahhh... Is your dmx controller base dmx address set to DMX start addr 0,0,0? if so, make sure your fixture starts at DMX addr 0,0,1 not 0,0,0 otherwise you'll loose a dmx channel due to the overlap with the MPC-DMX.

Then things should map out okay.

Secondly, Mic Cable is typicaly only two-wire v/s 3 wire. Depending on the cable and application, somtimes the pins are reversed too.

It's good to make sure it's a DMX standard pin-out end to end to prevent issues that will just mess with you.

Check for pin to pin polarity betwen pins 1-1, 2-2 & 3-3 on a Male -> Female XLR-3 for DMX goodness. :)

I figured it out.  I had the channel number on the Q-Spot and the channel on the DMX board set differently.  Thanks for all the help
