The issue with timing and various workarounds has been addressed in a number of threads in the LOR II forum at the help desk. However with the latest version of LORII we added skewing so that the fix to timings should take less than a minute (once you know how to skew).
I also asked Harold to let us know what all of the other problems were that he is having. We cannot help if we do not know the problem. As I said, we have have very few issues with upgrades and we cannot fix a problem if we are not informmed. Here is a paste of my response in the other forums:
The following addresses the only known problem of synchronization and upgrading to LOR II. It is most likely the problem that you are experiencing. This is the most common problem with LOR II upgrades and it does affect some people. However since the release of version 2.0.14 it has become much easier to correct. The good news is that if you are experiencing this particular problem, the fix is quick with 2.0.14.
The Problem: All versions of Light-O-Rama (LOR) use Windows Media Player (WMP) to determine the timing for a musical sequence. LOR II uses a different section of WMP to get the timing information than was used in some earlier versions. Unfortunately, with some MP3 files the two different versions of WMP return different timings. This only affects some versions MP3 files.
It turns out that the old version of WMP would sometimes change when the MP3 file started. Usually it would put a short delay at the start of the MP3 file that was not actually part of the song.
The fix: As stated above, most likely your sequence has a period of delay at the beginning as a result of the false delay that WMP previously reported. Hopefully you still have the original sequences! They are actually still in sync BUT they have a constant shift throughout.
Open the original LOR I sequence in the LOR II Sequence Editor then click the play button. Most likely the song starts sooner than the sequence expects so all of your timing happens too late. This offset can be any amount of time BUT it is usually somewhere between 0.2 and 1.0 seconds ( 0.3 seems to be fairly common ).
Assuming that the music starts sooner than expected, you need to shift the entire sequence to the left to match up with the music. You need version 2.0.14 to perform the shift.
Open the LOR I sequence file in the LOR II Sequence Editor
Click Edit-> Skew Track...
Select "Skew Left" and start with 0.3 seconds. (not 0.03).
See how it goes. Repeat the Skew (left or right) until the song is in sync.
Also: You mentioned in your post that you were having a number of problems. Please let us know the other problems are that you are having so we can help out.
If the "skew" does not solve your problem let us know and send a copy of the LOR I sequence (LMS) and audio file (MP3) to support@lightorama.com
The LOR I software is going to be re-packaged as S1 (ShowTime Software Suite 1). It will be sold and will continue to be supported. S1 will have bugs fixed but no plans to add new features. S1 will sell for about $29. You will need to pay about $80 to upgrade to S2 which will sell for about $100. S1 will have bugs fixed but there are not plans to add new features. Those that have paid full price for LOR1 get (S2) for free.
I upgraded to S2 this week and started looking at my sequences from last year. So far I see no issues and everything went silky smooth. I even went so far as starting the first sequence built with S2 with the Running trailer from Symphony by Sara Brightman. Thanks Dan! Looking forward to the firmware enhancements and the summer sale!
I will put my dos centavos in here. Dan, I think you see that we all want the maximum effects we can get. I support making the BIG change, and doing it in as timely a manner as possible, so we can use it for Christmas.
In software, compatibility is always a big concern, I live that first hand. You know what is best for your company, and you have our backing.
LightORama wrote: If we go with the big change, over 95% of LOR controllers will require only a firmware upgrade. The others are the CTB08 (non D version) and the MCP. The CTB08 will require a chip update. The MCPs will need to be mailed in (at our expense) for a firmware upgrade. There are not very many MCPs in the field.
As you said, the stickiest point will be non-LOR controllers. However, as I said, If we do go with the big change, we will engineer firmware upgrades for the non-LOR controllers that currently support the LOR protocol and are being used by our customers.
This is great and reassuring news indeed!
I've got quite a few of the oldest units that I need to keep running and was worried about these old timers (that continue to run flawlessly, I might add).
