So do you have to buy a domain name, then rent it for the time you need, or is the domain name always yours ?

You have to register the domain name and renew it periodically.

You can renew for one or more years depending on your needs.

Some hosting co's will do this as part of their servicec or you can do it yourself.

If you don't renew the domain name and let it lapse then anyone can hork it.

I use Network Solutions.  You get a ton of bandwidth and the ability to take the hits.

I can not speak for 1 and 1, but there are some hosts out there that will shut down your site if you get too many visits or load it up with too much data.

Look for easy ability to update, free email accounts and bandwidth when choosing.

My network solutions cost $12.50 per month and I do not have to worry about anybody swiping my domain name from me.

Ouch!  I do my own hosting and offer a great package for $8/month.

As for not having your domain name "swiped" all you hav to do is put a registrar lock on it and I like to set to "Auto-renewal" just so I dont forget to renew when its time.

OK, I signed up at 1&1 and now when I try to login, it basically tells me I don't exist. Is there a period that I have to wait to use it?

I've just been onto 1and1 in the UK (where I'm based) and NO CHRISTMAS THEMES available, now that really stinks!

Pete.

Was going to sign up. I have emailed them to see if it is available somewhere on their parent sites.

Using 1and1 for about 8 domains plus hosting, It is about $100 per year. That is about $8.33 a month.
