The link is to an article that, while a bit satirical, illustrates how humans tend to make decisions based on how directly it will affect them or those close to them. There's actually some serious science behind the article. In fact, there's a whole book.
It's an amusing read and you might even learn something.
Bottom line: Americans need to get out and travel more. We're generally a stupid lot.
