The FM25B I built and used last year had zero hum, and worked flawlessly.

The only time I had humming was when I ran the power cord and audio input cable parallel.  I use mine all the time to broadcast my XM radio around the house and have never had a problem with it.

On the Ramsey web site, they have a fix kit for the FM30s sold before July 07 that fixes the hum:

"The FM30SK upgrade kit applies to FM30 and FM35 series transmitters manufactured prior to June 2007. The purpose of the kit is to provide improved RF shielding to reduce the possibility of hum on the carrier. The kit consists of (6) shielding finger assemblies for the case and (1) clamp-on ferrite filter for the power supply."

Just ordered and received mine for my FM30 and it works great. I have built several 25's and 30's and can tell you that the modification made a huge difference for the 30; however, the only thing that would be of use for the 25 from this kit would be the ferrite filter. I suppose that you could just buy the kit from Ramsey only to use the ferrite or you could google ferrite filters and buy one cheaper somewhere else (radio shack?). I will say though, the modification took all of the hum out of the FM30 in my shop.

These guys are rip off artists, the price of the fix is $4.95 and the shipping/handling is $12.00.

This product is ok, but it seems to me that if they don't design it right in the first place, you shouldn't be forced to pay exorbitant "handling" fees for something that will fit into a first class envelope.

Why don't you write to them and tell them that? They might see it your way and give you a break on shipping. I've done things like that a lot and it often works. Bank fees, "service charges" etc. A lot in life is negotiable other than car prices.

Guys,

If you can tell them where and when you purchased your unit, they will waive the 4.95 fee and ship it for free too! Mine was free, I just had to do the work (15 minutes). I think that Ramsey has made a reasonable effort to overcome the "hum" for us. I have had very good results with them over the years and their tech staff is like none other too..... I suppose that they could have just ignored the issue and moved on, but they didn't so that speaks volumes for me.

Maybe I was a little too critical of them, but if you go to their web site the fix costs almost $20.

Thanks guys, I will call them.  Had a huge amount of hum last year and had to work at it to position the cables, add a power supply, etc.

They are the nicest people to work with.  I called them for a replacement audio jack and was prepared to pay for it, since I did NOT buy the kit from them.

They sent me 2 for free.

I'll have to look thru my 'stuff' to see if I can find a ferrite core.

I just ordered 10 clip-on 5mm ferrite RFI noise suppressors.  They should be here in the next 2 weeks.

I'll have 8 extras, so if you want one let me know BY PM ONLY.  First come, first served.

The cost will be $1 each (what I paid for them), plus whatever it is to ship them to you in a padded envelope.  That will most likely put them in the $2.50-$4 each range.

Once I have them and an envelope, I'll weigh it all up and get an exact amount.  You can then send me cash (I don't think there will be a problem sending approx $3-$4 in an envelope, but if you are uncomfortable doing that a money order will be fine.  No checks please).

I'm not looking to make a red cent on these, just wanna help out!

I got my 25B out a few weeks ago and hooked it up just to have some ambient music inside and out of the house. I had picked up a really bad hum and got to tweeking the transmitter with no luck.

I went to my PC and realized that although my PC speakers were turned down my sound output was maxed on the PC and in Media Player. I backed off to about 75% output and it fixed the problem immediately. I seems that I was pushing the sound into my 25B a bit too hot.

Let me know if this helps.

Cheers, Forest

Last month I purchased (and sold to 8 of you) a ferrite choke for my FM25b.  I finally got around to testing the choke...

HUGE difference.  90% to 95% of the hum just dissapeared when I snapped the choke on.
