I've seen signs that say "Hear the lights on XX.X FM"
and I 've tried "listen to the lights on XX.X FM". However there were some people that I could tell, just didn't get it. You know the ones, they pull up for 10 seconds then drive away. I just want to get the point across to tune in your car radio. I also have this scrolling across my 6'X 10" LED display as well.
Any help or opinions would be appreciated..
I understand where you're coming from, but that's an awful lot of words for a small sign.
I'd go with "Lights dance to music on XX.X FM"
or
"Hear the Lights Dance: XX.X FM"
or some such.
I guarantee you that most people will get it, and some will NEVER get it no matter if you tune the radio in their car for them yourself... But that's ok, that frees up more traffic-space for someone else who gets it
Our two signs (one at either side of the display) say:
"Listen to us at Christmas Radio FM 103.3"
and
"Tune To FM 103.3 Christmas @ The Fischer's Place Radio"
We also have a scrolling sign in the window that uses the "listen to the lights" and "lights dance to music" or "tune your car radio to 103.3 to hear the lights dance"-type language. I know the vast majority of people "get it", yet some will only stay a few seconds. Those may not "get it", or they may be neighbors that just like to pause to look every time they drive by, or maybe they just don't care and want to look at the lights for a second...
First off, I don't like the word "Dancing". It sounds wimpy. Like "Dancing with the Stars" only worse. Guys that make their own beer should NEVER use this word.
Second, if you insist on saying it, it should be "...are dancing to THE music on xx.x FM."

I prefer "dancing" to "sychronized" (too techy) or "blinking" (too non-trivial). But feel free to substitute your own word (I'm open to better suggestions myself...)
I prefer it without the extra "the". Just like I'd say "I'm listening to music" not "I'm listening to THE music...". And as I mentioned, fewer words on a sign is generally better...
I used "Listen to the Lights, Tune To 99.3FM" for 2007 but a lot of people didn't get it. I also had problems with the people who did get it. I had one couple sitting in front of my house at 12 noon. They saw me and asked why they could only hear static. I also had a few people who kept tuning to AM. I don't know why??
My exterior speakers helped a little. A lot of people finally got it when they put their windows down. I also put copies of an article in the newspaper out for people to read. HI think that answered everyone else's questions.
Sorry....I agree with Chuck. Lights can not dance!
Dance (from French danser, perhaps from Frankish) generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.

Hey, I'm hip with that -- but what DO they do? That is, what word would you prefer?
-Tim
P.S. If you remove the words "of the body", the definition actually fits pretty well-- that is, the lights (as a whole) "move" (e.g. are animated) to the music, usually rhythmic and used as a form of expression...
If you stand back and read this thread it's kinda funny.
Everyone has there own way that they prefer to advertise their display and I support that. It would be boring if everyone used the same exact sign and same exact display.
I also support that Tim is putting an effort to come up with new sign ideas.
There is nothing wrong with critiquing ideas, when asked for. But Tim is also asking for an alternative to "dancing" with no reply, and now I'm also curious what a good option for that word would be.
The only idea I can come up with is 'Light display plays on....' or, 'Hear light display on....' or, 'Hear the bazillion lights display play on....' you get the idea.
"Whatever you do, DO NOT TUNE YOUR RADIO TO FM xx.x"
or
"Listen to the lights get jiggy to music on FM xx.x"
or (this is the best one):
"*** ***** **** **** - **** ** ** **.*"
Seriously. When I thought of it, that last one is so brilliant that I'm not sharing it with you*. You'll have to wait until December 1st like everyone else to see what it is.
*I even added random "*" because it would be obvious if I didn't.
It wasn't that many years ago that I drove up to my first 'animated' show and couldn't figure out what to do either.
The main problem was the sign was poorly lit and way too small. It was also placed way too close to the ground, where it was easily missed and/or hidden by other cars already parked outside.
I almost think a properly placed (up higher) vegas style sign (racing lights around edges) with the proper FM frequency shown in HUGE font ... would be just as effective as saying anything else.
That said, its kind of nice to have a sign with the website on it and something to identify yourself with ... and the frequency only doesn't allow for that. Maybe two signs is really ideal, in a perfect, no budget limit ... world.
BTW, love the name "bazillion lights" ... very cool.

Great ideas, Great discussion.....
This is better than I thought.
I'm getting real road signs made up and I want to get it right the first time. My friends brother in law saw the display last year and offered to make me some signs for free!
Another thought to think about. My style of sequencing is more like the lights are playing, as in a visual musical instrument. Also I'm not doing just Christmas music so specifying Christmas music isn't totally correct.
