Am thinking of buying a Light O Rama unit to change the colors on my under construction for 2008 year star between red and blue (the sequence would pause a half second with one at 100% and the other at 0%, fade up to 100% over 2 seconds time, pause a half second, and then fade the other color down over 2 seconds. Then the sequence would reverse. Allready have it written in the LOR demo program)
But $400 seems kind of expensive for such a simple use. Curious what others have done that have Nativity scenes running with LOR or other such units. Or any ideas.
My entire display is blow mold Nativity scene (approximately 14 pieces plus star and stable if I'm counting correctly).

In my LOR sequences, I dim all of the lights except the nativity while the "Christmas Story" from Luke is being read. I do not like it turning on and off a lot so I tend to have it off more than on.
I do like your idea of twinkling a star so I may have to borrow that for 2008. I was going to make a star like Mr. Holdman's with 3 channels in clear lights. I may have to add some colored lights as well.
The thing is my display is only a Nativity scene. But who knows what the future might bring. I've kicked around askiing a friend of mine (who is a DJ at a Christian station) to record narration of the portion of the Bible dealng with Christ's birth. I could then turn my figures on and off as needed to help "tell" the story.
What I don't want to do is synchronize my Nativity scene so it turns on and off in synch with TSO etc. Thus why I'm wondering if anyone is in a similar situation as what I'm probably getting into.
(I'm crossing my fingers LOR does some sort of sale again this summer. I can stomach $250 or so alot better than $400 for this idea)

That would be 50-100$
Actually about $15 at Menards

I work at a Menards here and I've never seen such a thing. Then again we just moved to a much larger store a few months ago so maybe there's something down an unexplored aisle...
Any additional info would be awesome!

Just wondering why you need LOR, won't D-light controllers work too? Pay $110.00 for the Gold edition and finish it your self, and if you don't have your own encloser, then pay the extra $25.00 and buy one. For $209.00 you can get the platinum.

Actually I wound up buying a pre-soldered board last week during LOR's Secret Sale. Will add my own enclosure and cords. when I wrote my original post, I was a LOR newbie (ok still am but know more now) and was looking at the "industrial strength"
showtime products thus where I came up with the higher prices.
I did wind up finding one of those two channel fader boxes at Menards-it kind of does what I want but LOR will give me alot of more variety.

I used a plywood cutout nativity scene with my display. I had 4 different spot lights on LOR channels as well as a star above the scene. I used my LOR to dim all of the lights on my house and yard to about 40%, as the lines from A Charlie Brown Christmas started with Linus saying "I can tell you what Christmas is all about..." and then Linus tells the story of Jesus birth. As he does, I light up the star and the various characters in the scene as he describes them by turning on the appropriate spot light. I used this at the end of each show, which was about 6 songs long. Afterwards I used a voiceover to thank people for coming and asked them to take time out from their busy schedule to attend a church of their choice and make Jesus a part of their Christmas Celebration. Got a few compliments on that one. I hope this gives you some ideas!

WARNING! Do not buy a multi-channel controller! If you do, you will have a few "spare" channels. You will then add some lights to those channels. When you run out of "spare" channels, you will buy another controller. And so on....
Next thing you know, you'll be out in a Walmart parking lot with a cardboard sign - "Will Work for Lights or Controllers"
BWAHAHAHAHAAA!

That's the beauty of computer animated displays. Though wildly dancing lights is what you mostly see around here, just because you can do it, that doesn't mean you have to do it. Now you have the ability to change your lights to your whim, even if that means you have 14 channels on all the time, and you just use two for your star. You get to decide what's important. But now you can make even the most subtle changes until things are "just right".
For ideas, I'll toot Tim's horn for him. If you haven't already gone to his site (see his signature), it contains a wealth of info. Especially how to frugally build your own enclosures/cords, as well as his approach to the Linus speech.
I only have one photo online of my Nativity Scene.
The tallest Wiseman (just to the right of center, sandwiched between the sidewalk and lamp post) is about three feet tall-approximately half life size. (to the right and out of camera range is a shepherd and three sheep)
The star is due for a rebuild this summer. Going to a wooden frame with regularly spaced holes that will accomodate 70 lights (35 red/35 blue)

If you're going to re-do the star anyway, you might as well do it right!

The narration part is close to what I was envisioning. Somehow I forgot about "a multitude of heavenly host". If I can find a few smaller angels, it'll be perfect. (my current one came from Bronners in 1997 and is about 24 inches tall. Has a trumpet in her hans).
What song is that with "One King Held" as the lyrics? I've never heard it before but it is definitely appropriate. Now if I can figure out which King holds what...
