Hey everyone, I have a question. My wife is OK with the christmas light display as long as it is christ centered. This is the first year with LOR 48 ch.. What songs would you suggest for the onening of my show? I love the amazing grace that Holdman did and will do it i'm sure.

The answer to your question will depend on how many songs you are wanting to do and what kind of message you want to send.

I did "Emmanuel" (originally sequenced by Daniel) and love the song (by Michael W. Smith).  If you are trying to send a message in your display, consider adding "The Coloring Song" by Petra.

One thing that will help your display is to try to have some "fun" songs in there too.  Gaayla Peevey's "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" may not be Christ centered, but it is kid friendly and will widen the appeal of your display for many younger children.

There are many ways you can use your display to proclaim Jesus, but one needs to remember that not everybody wants to be "preached" to all the time.

If your goal is to proclaim Jesus in your display, perhaps you should consider adding a couple of kid friendly secular songs into your lineup in order to draw the attention of those watching your display.

An effective witness is Linus' Soliloquy from Charlie Brown Christmas.

I found an AWESOME song last week that has a wonderful message and has alot of potential for sequencing.  It is Christmas Angels by Michael W. Smith.

here is a link to the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CpO4QHZhiM

Edit: forgot to mention that I am using this as the last song in my show as to leave the message playing in their heads and not just the lights.

I try to have a variety of songs.

I start out with 'Winter Wonderland" Annie Lennox  - Thanks Richard

"Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" TSO

"Kay Thompson's Jingle Bell's" Michael W. Smith

"Carol of the Bells" by David Foster

"Linus and Lucy" by Vince Guaraldi

Linus Gospel speech - Thanks Tim

"Silent Night" by Mannheim Steamroller

"Deck the Halls" by Mannheim Steamroller

"Wizards in Winter" TSO

This is my play list.  I have about 6 different shows from this list.  Usually about 6-7 songs will make up a show.

Except for the two I thanked someone, the songs are presequenced from LOR.  I adapt them some to my display.

If you plan your songs right, you can give the whole story of Christ thru your display. I am on duty today (24hr shifts) and do not recall the name. But I picked up a CD last year that essentially accomplished this by the end of five or six songs. For example:

1. Anticipation of the birth, maybe something with the wisemen
2. Birth itself, no room at the inn
3. Angels celebration
4. Christ born for you and me ("God With Us" comes to mind by Todd Agnew)
5. Eternal salvation

Also many of the traditional Christmas songs make very strong statements of faith and would be both a witness and recognizable sing-a-longs for non-believers.

One song that comes to mind regarding the anticipation of Christ is "O Come, O Come Emmanuel."  I've always loved that song!

keepCHRISTinchristmas,

I love that song and your idea about them leaving with a message and not just thinking about the lights.

You're right,.. That is AWESOME!

that song would be great to sequence.....I can already see some parts of it in my head....

I am just west of Peoria, anbout 2 1 hours from you.  I go to Bourbonnais quite a bit off Carreer Center Road delivering cabinets to the subdivision going up.  Nice to find another display here in Illinois and not to far from me.

Your picture of your display looks nice.

Yes, it is in East Peoria.  It is a huge lighted parade but no animation.  As far as I can tell, Scott (scottloftus) in Marshall (Springfield) is an hour and a half, Chuck (Cmoore)in Cahokia (3 hours),  you in Kankakee (2 1/2 hours), the Chicago ones (3+ hours), then there one or two in Indianapolis (3 1/2 hours).  So I am kind of central to you all.  I am looking to have a Mini here in a year or two and looks good with so many near by.

Take a look a Scott Myers setup of his manger scene, perhaps he well post that video here. If you can do it how he does it using the Linus's speech or however you choose to read Luke 2....then the bible seems to come alive though words and sight. I like it so much that I want to give it a try. It is a dramatize reading of the bible you might say.

I started off with a Christ centred theme...but went wayward..... I am adding a ferris wheel and 36 channels Animated Lighting controllers this year , a FM transmitter and if time permits a flying swing carousel.  Now add this to my animal cut outs and the two new ones that I am adding (we as Canadians like animals)...thats why we get mauled by cougars, bear, Polar bear, attacted by elk, moose, coyotes because we think that we can go up to any animal and pet them....and we do. LOL   That is why animal displays are important in our displays. Canadians are attracted to animals. Now add like me just 3,100 lights or 200,000 lights like others here in the Edmonton, Alberta area.

Now take a look at the manger scene off in the corner somewhere that I have or that someone else might have that has 200,000 lights in the Edmonton area......now what do you think draws the most attention......yea,  NOT  the manger scene I can assure you. This goes for a number of displays that I have seen from driving around. Those that have many other displays and a good amount of lights (3,000 to infinity) and a small manger scene...well that manger scene is almost forgotten by everyone (exspecailly those who have large yards). My yard is small enough that you can still see the manger, but I need to get back on tract this Christmas season. Now if you have a large manger scene with sheppards, donkeys, sheep, lambs and other cattle and it is in a prime location, then this well help off set the many flashing lights.

Suppose you are using those 48 channel controllers and you have 45,000 lights with no other displays except the a good size manger scene. Now you have 45,000 lights flashing to music ( this well be the attention grabber) and yet the manger scene will stand out enough to get the message across. Now as you put up more and more displays the manger scene gets less and less attention.

I said all that to say this...... that there needs to be a good balance throughout the entire display that you put up.  Where no display gets forgotten.

I am sorry I spelled your last name wrong Scott, well you forgive me? I  missed the e in Meyers, now I just noticed I spelled your first name wrong too. I thought your name is spelled like my name with two tt's.

I am glad you posted your video here, hopefully it will help out our fellow decorator. The other one is good as well.
