CHuck, That's the difference between us. I worked the vendor room all day and was too wound up to go sit someplace. I only sleep 3-4 hours a night so going to a restaurant, then a bar and then to bed would have me climbing the walls.
I put up most of my display after everyone else has gone to bed. To me life is way to short to spend any more than 3-4 hours a day wasting it sleeping.
But, I am married to someone who must get 8 hours of sleep a night so do know about your side of it.

Heh. I, too, only sleep a few hours a night but I still don't want to HAVE to trudge around town to eat dinner.
It's a matter of convenience.
I've been tap-dancing around it but I think I'm going to have to just come out and say it: The Deep-South s***S. (I could get really non-Christmassy with my REAL opinion of it but I'll stop at that.) I don't mean anything negative about anyone in particular - just the area in general.
My only request for a location is it be accessible via Harley. I've traveled on the Harley from Canada to Mexico, and from Pacific to Atlantic coasts, so just about any location will work for me. I'll be there no matter where it is!!

I guess that means that Hawaii is out of the question....Darn, Chuck and company looked so cute in their grass skirts!

I thought for sure he could see us.
What about Columbus, Ohio? Kinda central, great convention facilities, easy freeway and airport access. Tons of restaurants both in and out of the hotels. Not nearly as expensive as some of the suggestions and yes there are plenty of other things to do here.

I will be going to a huge Model Railroad convention in June in Louisville, Ky. The location appears to be a great location and so far people are registering from all over the country. Lots of hotels (with restaurants and bars), mammoth convention center, centrally located, handy airport. Maybe Nashville as an alternate as well. No matter where it is, I am going to try to make it, to much fun to miss.

DC all the way!The real challenge is PLUS has grown too big for most hotel conference centers and isn't big enough for most dedicated convention centers. Gatlinburg (PLUS2007) fit the niche we are in, at a reasonable price and in a very family friendly atmosphere, though I will admit the hotels were a step back into the mid-20th century...Hmmm... Kennedy Center would be a good place. Cost would probably kill the idea.
Just some 2 cents. I guess I'm pretty biased for DC., but no matter where PLUS is I am going!

I would LOVE to travel to DC, Never been to Florida so that would be nice, Columbus would be close, Frankenmuth ALL THE WAY because I am from Michigan and lived in Frankemuth for a yeart and a half and absolutly loved the place. However no matter what my family and I are planning on making PLUS 2009 part of our family vacation. So needless to say, I AM GOING!
How about Arlington TX? It is minutes from DFW airport, has a few hotels that could probably accomodate a group our size and is right next to six flags and the ballpark in Arlington.
ChuckHutchings wrote: And since Site 1 was in Gatlinburg LAST year, site 2 won't be.
You know, I'm still waiting for you to tell me exactly what you were looking for that was not available in Gatlinburg! So far you have not been able to come up with anything except vague generalities. I'm not trying to be on your case about it. I really want to know what the problem was.
ChuckHutchings wrote: Among these just and rightful amenities are the following:
1. FUNCTIONAL air conditioning in ALL areas, including hallways and lobbies.
You forgot the most important one which is PRICE! (Actually I may agree with you on A/C being #1.) Consider the '07 price the ceiling. The price can go DOWN but not up! I don't want to spend $150 pre night just for a place to sleep. I would rather spend my money at the PLUS vendors than on a room for a few nights.

ChuckHutchings wrote: There are times when you just want to return from a long day to your hotel, have dinner and then relax in the bar with other people and then go to bed. Having to walk around town to accomplish these things kind of defeats the purpose.
With this in mind, I wouldn't consider Gatlinburg (or Tennessee) PERIOD for a conference. I don't know what it is with the hotels there but why they don't have restaurants or bars is beyond me. Is there some law that says hotels can't have these things?
And, let's face it - Gatlinburg is way off the beaten path.
Find a locale with at least a Marriott or Hilton nearby and you'll have my vote. ChuckHutchings wrote: Heh. I, too, only sleep a few hours a night but I still don't want to HAVE to trudge around town to eat dinner.

My brain just wants to explode when I'm there.
Come on now you are just being silly. Trudge around town? The walk to the nearest place to eat was as short or shorter than walking across a big Marriott or Hilton to get to the lobby! Besides who actually chooses to eat hotel food? Triple the price for mediocre food? No thanks! I don't want to spend $200 a night to pay for a Hilton! That prices many MANY PCers out of coming to PLUS! I don't care about bars when I'm trying to attend a Christmas lighting convention but for those that do there were some literally right across the street.

Alrighty everyone. PLUS2007 is ancient history and I already have a list of what can be better at future events.
Let's close down this thread and move on to what we want to see at PLUS2009.
